Château Phélan Ségur vs. J. Lohr

…drinking château phélan ségur saint-estèphe 2004. this bottle of bordeaux originates in france and has a price range of $32-35 (somewhat pricey in my book) i don't think that i would buy this one, it was an office pick.  it is made from dark ruby plums with cedar, dried herbs, sweet cherries, and plums. this was new for me because i didn’t know that they put herbs and bush in wine (interesting, i know!!!even with all those flavors, it is a very very dry wine. it also had the taste of black licorice and tar (not a fan of either) character with fruit. my boss said, “this is what wine is supposed to taste like…” hmm yeah ok, about that....i tasted it and thought it was just ooook. i don’t think my palate is classy enough for fancy wine like this but maybe I’ll get there one day. then they brought out a bottle of j.lohr seven oaks 2008 (cabernet sauvignon) to compare to the château phélan ségur (bordeaux) . this carbarnet sauvignon comes from the vineyards of california. the price range for this bottle is $11- 21 and made from black cherries, black currants and plum fruit, complemented by vanilla. i thought it tasted like fruit with a hint of flowers. out of the two wines, i definitely preferred the cabernet sauvignon because it was slightly sweeter than the bordeaux though it is also a dry wine. it had a lingering aftertaste of the flower/fruit mixture which was nice and flavorful...i think it would be a great wine for a nice steak...wow, i shouldn't have said that now i want a steak toooo!!
